Engrossing account of a 1982 Middle East War from the standpoint of Israeli war veterans filmed beautifully in what looks to be a form of rotoscope. This is not a "cartoon"--it is a serious and thought-provoking intellectual film. Lots of action and introspection. Subtitled in English from the Hebrew.

This should be on the must-see list of anyone with an interest in the Israel-Palestine situation. Pretty well illustrates the moral ambiguity of the Israeli side. The use of animation to tell the story is an interesting choice. It gives the presentation a dreamlike quality that works pretty well. A minor quibble is that the animation is a bit strained or stiff at times - this appears to be a result of the animation system they used - developed in-house rather than a commercially available system.

The Lebanon war of 1982 still has a huge impact on the psyche of today's 40 & 50-something Israelis. This film does an amazing job of showing why. The characters are real in every way except their animated form. I found the portrayal of the war itself to be overly cynical, but there is probably a good deal of reality there, too. If you are looking for a shoot-em-up action movie, you may find the depth boring. If you are looking to understand a defining moment in the modern Israeli experience from the first hand point of view, this film nails it. (And it's cool to see a war movie with 80s music instead of Painted Black and Purple Haze)

This was hands down one of the best films that I have ever seen, period. The mixture of animation with the documentary dialogue was not only fresh, but flawless in the representation of the events that are being described. Also the musical score was perfect; it drove you into the storyline and caressed every emotion that could be felt with that particular scene. Not a film to be missed!

Superb. It's called an "animated documentary" in the Q & A bonus feature on the DVD. The animation is unique and beautiful, and the interviews and scenes it illustrates are well worth seeing. Most of the movie features real interviews, two parts (the director's two main friends) were voiced by actors, which means their experiences, like the the director's himself (he is the protagonist) were synthesized in the script. The story centers on an atrocity that the Israeli army let happen. You don't see many stories with this much depth, where ordinary men try to understand what they did in the army when they were teenagers. Highly recommended.

I have to agree with others who thought the animation was distracting. I'd read enough about this slaughter to know the facts as presented are pretty accurate. I think it would have been better without the cartoon like graphics. Worth watching in any case.

Certainly this is excellent material for an engrossing movie. However, in my estimation, too much of the essence of this movie is lost in its portrayal through animation. There is so much to be gleaned from the story and from the characters, but I believe the animation trivialized it and therefore the depth of the subject matter and the depth of the characters are given short shrift. Watching this "cartoon" can be compared to hearing a Rachmaninoff Concerto being played with electronic instruments This could have been a superb movie had it not been animated.

I admire the artistry & animation of this movie and a little about the memory breakdown but I found it a bit boring. About every 10 mins. something interesting would happen. Otherwise in between, listening to the monotone voices were putting me to sleep. In fact, I didnt finish the movie to be honest. So if you dont want to take this review seriously, I understand. Watch it for yourself and draw ur own conclusion. I'm also not a big war-movie person and this had more than I cared for, only the psychological analyst of dreams & memories interest me but not enough to finish it.
