An impetuous princess discovers that her reckless choice has put both her family and her father's kingdom in peril in this animated adventure from Pixar films. As a toddler, Merida (voice of Kelly MacDonald) saw her father, King Fergus (Billy Connolly), do battle with one of the fiercest animals in the kingdom -- a horribly scarred hulk of a bear named Mordu. Though Fergus lost his leg defending his family, Merida and her mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), managed to escape the beast before it vanished back into the forest. Years later, Merida has grown up to become not just a skilled archer, but also a beautiful princess who inspires a competition among the eligible bachelors in the land. But Merida has little interest in getting married, and the harder her mother pushes the issue, the more fiercely she resists it. When the tournament for her hand gets under way and a deep divide opens between mother and daughter, Merida makes a wish that threatens the future of both her family and the entire kingdom. Another winner from Pixar! The princess Merida is a teen with a mind of her own, struggling against her mom's constant lessons on how to behave. When she is being forced to marry, she runs off and meets a witch. Buys a spell to change her mother and it unexpectedly turns her mom into a bear. Merida has to keep everyone from killing her mom while trying to break the spell. There's a bit of fun to her trying to teach her mom to fish like a bear - but also moments where the mom stops being mom as a bear, and becomes just a dangerous bear for a bit. AWESOME animation -- happy to have another story for the girls to encourage non-princess behavior (sports, independance etc.) instead of looking pretty and marrying a prince to live happily ever after - not so big on the give your mom a spell idea - but lessons are learned and all is well in the end. The 3 little redheaded boys are cute and fun little devils. The accents make this a little bit hard to understand. A good movie!

Although we enjoyed the film that had excellent animation, the story follows the time honored Disney formula and is predictable. The title was also questionable. Good family fare.

The movie was a bit slow-moving. Our granddaughters said it was ok but not one of their favorites. The moral of the story was good demonstrating what happens when you don't listen to your parents, and to be careful what you wish for because you actually might get it.

Fairytales are traditional and nobody messes with tradition, right? Price Charming wins the hand of the fair princess and they live happily ever after. But Merida is a tomboy at heart with red unruly hair who loves riding horseback through the woods mastering an archery course. And the princes from the neighboring clans are far from charming. So of course Merida seeks out a spell to change tradition and of course the spell goes all wrong. In the end, the real question isn’t will they live happily ever after but who will learn from the experience. I am so glad Disney has created another “anti-princess” like Mulan. Not all girls have to love pink and fancy dresses. Some can wield swords or bows and fight for what’s right. There are a couple intense scenes that some may be sensitive too.

I really loved this film! I went to see it with my young niece and loved the portrayal of children and parents connecting. And I appreciated the fact that not everything was revealed in the commercials. Definitely worth watching!
