This is a story about the passing of an elderly parent and the dissolution of a family as the surviving adult siblings go their separate ways in life. Mostly, the plot is developed around the selling of the country house and items of personal property the mother leaves behind. For each character, their are fading memories embedded in each object. I found the story to be as much a meditation on the meaning of things and the sentiments we attach to them as on the meaning of life and its passing. This is an intelligent, sensitive, and bittersweet drama.

I loved this movie, and will not repeat the plot as it has been covered elsewhere. The film makes significant points on many levels. Even to relatives, valuable, personal objects have different meanings. Value can be seen in monetary terms or in emotional terms. Breaking up a collection of items that have special meaning to the collector or people intimately connected to the collection alters the collection. Removing art objects from their personal settings and placing them in a museum somehow sterilizes them even if it allows art a large audience. This movie makes the viewer think and adds a level of sensitivity to the value of art.

I would like to know why two intelligent reviews of "Summer Hours" that rate the film 3.5 stars & 5 stars were ignored by Blockbuster. If I hadn't heard about this film from another trusted source, I would never have added it to my queue. How many other films have been mis-rated on Blockbuster? That I have to ask this question is upsetting.
