Although dated, it is a far better movie with better science. The 2008 version is padded with unnecessary characters, political correctness, silly science and every cliche plot device Hollywood insists on putting into these movies. Read More This is another example of unimaginative TV screenwriters diminishing a good story by weaving it with formula governmental intrigue to make a social and political point. From this movie one might gather that government conspiracy, military ineptitude, and misuse of science are what the original story was about. It was not.
The good news is the acting was only half bad and the thread of the original story could almost be followed. Watch it on TV if nothing else is on but do spend money to rent it.
Better still watch the original movie from the early 70s. It is much better and mostly captures the book. It is good but not great, so if you are a reader, read the book first, then watch the original movie. Again, leave this version for when you are really bored and there is nothing else on TV. Read More This remake fell far short of the original, turning out to be a long, tedious mostly boring movie with an abundance of politically correct drivel. Now Hollywood remakes a movie simply to interject their stereotypical politically correct, elitist and supercilious view of the US, capitalism and the ecology. In A.S. they covered the darling stereotypical Hollywood models - sexual preference, feminism and race in their characters. The movie was their perfect propaganda machine by espousing their political viewpoints. Instead of a good, scary, basic sci-fi flick, this plague was inflicted upon us because of corporate greed, capitalism and right-wing politicians making money and their careers by feathering the nests of big, mean corporations where right-wingers/industrialists = eco-terrorists and anything we do to alter the planet, no matter how insignificant may end up being the seeds of destruction of mankind.
