Zapped! (1982)

Carrie meets Porky's as Charles in Charge co-stars Scott Baio and Willie Aames re-team for this mischievous-minded teen comedy about a hormonal high school science student suddenly bestowed with telekinetic powers. Emerson High School genius Barney Springboro (Baio) has a keen understanding of the periodic table of the elements, and a curious knack for experimentation. One day, while Barney is conducting a particularly sensitive experiment in horticulture, the lab is suddenly set ablaze, and his dreams appear to go up in flames. But any scientist will tell you that some of the best discoveries appear from the ashes of failure, and when Barney realizes that he now possesses the power of telekinesis his high school life suddenly becomes a lot more interesting. Of course the jocks don't stand a chance against a geek who can knock out a home run with the power of his mind, and as Barney's hormones take hold the skirts begin to flip and the tops begin to pop. Now, as the senior prom draws near, Barney does his best to land a date for the dance as his horrified parents put in a call to the local exorcist, his best friend Peyton (Aames) joins in on the fun, and a local reporter attempts to break the biggest story this small town has ever known. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

NOTE: this movie is from the 80's, so please expect cheesy 80's acting. Now on the more important things...who can say they don't love Scott Baio & Willie Aames?? They are back as a duo in Zapped ( aside from Charles in Charge). I used to watch this as a younger kid & LOVED it then...now a good movie to have on while you do something else. :)

Who said Scott Baio only did 'Happy Days'? Despite some mediocre acting, etc. I found it most enjoyable. Though I was never a big Heather Thomas fan, it was interesting to see her in an actual ROLE for a change, come her former pinup status. Baio and Ames played quite well, given the mediocre writing. Much of the highlight went to Felice Schacter (BERNADETTE); she's far too pretty to be assumed a 'nerd'. Her performance far out stood the others. For special effects, yes I've seen better. But this was more comic book quality. The cheesiest scenes are the horrified religious-nut mother who calls an 'exorcist', so stupid it's hilarious. And the prom scene: A typical HS prom, but with a twist. Barney gets teed over how things are going and allows chaos: dresses flying off girls, etc. Again, hilarious, since most of the effects are cheesy.

This movie is fun. There are plenty of movies that use telekinesis in a superhero or horrific way but this movie plays the concept for comedy. It works very well. Many people would like to have telekinetic powers so they could carry out the actions depicted in this movie.

I remember watching this when it was brand new. I felt a little nostalgic watching it again. Sure, it's typical 70's/80's-era cheesy teenage stuff, but I like it. The prom scene was like every high school boy's fantasy way back then.

Typical cheesy, 80's movie. Love it. Even though it is cheesy.

This is your typical 1980s cheesy, pre-teen, film ala Porky's and The Last American Virgin. I saw this movie many years ago, so my comments might be a little dated, and my rating is probably a little over-inflated. Oddly enough, the story in Zapped is not as terrible as one might think. Nevertheless, the movie attempts to make up for poor acting and terrible special effects with gratuitous nudity. It is a Charles in Charge reunion, or sorts, as Baio and Aames are both characters in Zapped. Testosterone and teen high jinks rule the day in this movie. My recommendation: have a few drinks before watching this movie and it may be better than you think.

Gratuitous nudity can not make up for bad acting, bad writing and even worse special affects. This isn't "Manos: The Hands of Fate" bad but it is pretty dreadful.

back in 1983 when this was on cable, i remember as a small kid that this was cutting edge adult comdey. watching it now, i know without question, its a piece of dog doo. one good thing going for it: the opening credits..the way they wrote ZAPPED is what a small kid wanted to see back in the 80's but usually got big blovky yellow writing. btw, the rest of the credits are blocky yellow. dont bother.
