First, they now know about Sherlock Holmes. The movie involved my participation in that I had to get them up to speed on why the early years of the main character are significant. Second, the kids watched eagerly to see Holmes solve the mystery of the missing trophy. I looked at my kids faces and could see they were really caught up into it. If your kids like puzzles and riddles, they will enjoy this. Thirdly, the amimation used in certain scenes was also appealing to the kids. Lastly, the movie reminded them of Indiana Jones. The dangerous situations, dueling, swinging from chandeliers and the strange contraptions made it exciting for them. This is no coincidence since Steven Spielberg put this movie together. I thought it was great and fun for the whole family. There are a couple scenes that could scare some of your real little ones, but I believe it is good for those over eight years old. The nightmare scenes were pretty intense, and the mummified girls and wax was pretty severe. But, no nightmares from our 7 year old after glazing over explanations by us. He completely understands the concept of poison causing bad things to happen, and we just plain lied about what happened to the girls being mummified. But, really well done. We wish Steven Spielberg would do more of these or a well-done series started. The actors who played the young Watson and Holmes were SUPERB. So well done!! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Young Sherlock Holmes if movie for any fan of the Harry Potter series and for fans of films like The Goonies and Neverending Story.
I give the movie four stars four the amount of heart and wit that went into the script. The character of Sherlock is not quite the introvert that he is in the books, but for this movie, it works to change it. Watson, lets the viewer experience the adventure from an outsiders perspective.
The only real complaint that I have about this movie is that there is the obligitory '80's Temple of Doom ripoff scene.
If you long for the days of Spielburg produced childrens films, or just want a decent adventure flick, this one is definitely worth a try. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More i saw this movie when it first came out in theatres in 1985. it's one my all time favorite movies and i own it as well. it's a lot of fun. if you're a fan of mysteries and interested in how sherlock holmes became to be, supposition of course, this is one for you. i wouldn't expect a perfect flick, but as i said, it's lots of fun. the special effects are great for the time, mid 80's, and as i recall the film won a few awards for fx. i enjoyed the plot and the intelligence of the movie. it was a bit sad towards the end. give this one a try. Read More I watched this movie with my kids (10 &13) and we all really liked it. There were a few parts that had my 10 year old with a pillow over his eyes but a good kind of scared. Some things were a little too far fetched, but that is what Sherlock Holmes is all about. Fun find! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More This movie is great for kids AND adults who are fans of Sherlock Holmes. The storyline is consistent with other Sherlock Holmes movies, suggesting several great "beginnings" of the traditions we all love (the pipe, the hat, "the game's afoot," etc.). My 12-year-old son, who also loves the Harry Potter movies, was fascinated throughout the entire movie. We both noted that young Watson even LOOKS like a chubby Harry Potter! Nice adventure, clever plot, good relationships among the child actors. You'll be glad you rented it. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
