John Schlesinger directs the war romance Yanks, based on the story by Colin Welland. Set in England at the end of WWII, the story concerns three American GIs and their affairs with British women of varying social status. The central romance concerns Sgt. Matt Dyson (Richard Gere) and Jean Moreton (Lisa Eichhorn making her film debut), who is the daughter of shopkeepers (Rachel Roberts and Tony Melody). He falls in love with her but she is still infatuated with her boyfriend Ken (Derek Thompson). Higher up on the class scale, the officer John (William Devane) has a brief extramarital affair with socialite Helen (Vanessa Redgrave). The third pairing involves Sgt. Danny Ruffelo (Chick Vennera) in a fling with Mollie (Wendy Morgan). Eventually, the Americans and the Britains find themselves surrounded by racism at a New Year's Eve dance. Annie Ross from the vocal jazz group Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross appears briefly as a Red Cross nurse. Yanks won two BAFTA awards in 1980: to Shirley Russell for Best Costume Design and to Rachel Roberts for Best Supporting Actress. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

A bit of history of relations between the British and American soldiers in WWII and also the difference between how black soldiers were treated in England as opposed to the United States. I really enjoyed this movie...Richard Gere is always terrific.

I caught this movie on DISH Network late one night when I couldn't sleep. I had never even heard of it before, but after watching it I was VERY surprised at how much I liked it. The cinematography was extrodinary and the acting supurb. The story moves somewhat slow, but it never insults your intelligence with cheesy dialogue, cheap theatrics or a predictable Hollywood ending. I also really liked the fact that, although it takes place during WW2, the director didn't feel the need to include unrelated combat scenes or create a sub-plot for dramatic effect. Im not sure if the version I saw was a "directors cut" or something, but the running time was different than this DVD...the "Yanks" I watched was almost 3-hours long!!

Both my husband and I enjoyed this film very much. A different insight into the American GI's in England during WWII. Nice love interest. No "shoot 'em up-bang, bang war movie, but very good.

Okay performances and nice cinematography. Story was slow, however. Worth watching once

A beautifully acted and filmed period piece set in war time England. The US Army is building up for the D-Day invasion and the Yanks are making themselves at home. This is Lisa Eichhorn's debut and she all but steals the movie, with much help from Richard Gere in what I think is one of his best performances. Director John Schlesinger and his cinematographer do a wonderful job. This movie is an under rated gem. I have watched it several times and will do so again.

Amazing insight to the time and place covered in the film, as well as social situations. Quite moving to anyone interested in wartime England. I enjoyed the scenes with glimpses of the English towns and countryside as well.

WWII era sound track was fantastic. Worth renting for the music. The British actors/actresses were outstanding.

This is a trip back in time for some of us, and an education for younger people. If you're a Richard Gere fan, he looks soooo good. I enjoyed the movie from beginning to end, especially the scene's where he visits the girls family. You felt like you were there, and could feel how it was during the war. Give it a chance.

If you love this time frame you will just love this movie. I love this period of time and this movie makes you feel like you have stepped back into 1940's England when our troops were over there being deployed. It's about fear, rations, romance, love, and burning desire. Richard Gere never ever disappoints me. I also love the movie Swing Shift which is also a 1940's period piece. Rent them both, you'll be glad you did!
