This movie was a beautiful rendition of the book, although I had the same problem I tend to have when I read a book before watching its movie version: There are so many details and character insights that cannot be conveyed on the screen, so I necessarily found shades of character realization lacking in the screen version.

Wonderful movie. It's very upsetting to me to see certain abuses (that I know were and are real life) acted out on the screen. But the balance of right overcoming wrong is satisfying. Loved the character and story development. Queen Latifa is a gifted actress and a delight to watch in any role. Same for Dakota Fanning, whose talent shines through any transitional age changes. Those "awkward years" just don't appy to her.

Not just a "chick flick" ... my husband commented several times how much he liked this movie. Good tension in the plot and within the portrayal of the characters. Moves along slowly but this is not intended to be an action film ... follows more along the lines of a character study. Some portions of the plot were overly naive and exceptionally unrealistic given the time of history that the movie is portraying...other than that, it is a movie worth watching and an excellent reminder of the not too distant past.
