The fancy footwork and star appeal of Gregory Hines as Raymond, an exiled American, and the powerful grace of Mikhail Baryshnikov as Nikolai, a defector, combine with a great production design to carry this otherwise thinly-stretched tale of intrigue. With a stellar supporting cast (Isabella Rossellini as Raymond's wife, Helen Mirren as Nikolai's lover, and Jerzy Skolimowski, the Polish director, as a wily KGB agent), the film has a few excellent moments. Nikolai has defected from the former USSR some time in the past. While on a trip, his plane spectacularly crashes on a runway in Siberia. Trapped in the country he had escaped, he is brought to stay with Raymond, an American who defected during the Vietnam war. Nikolai desperately wants to get out of the country, but the Russians have other plans. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This is a powerful movie to revisit now based on current immigration issues. What will people do to gain freedom? Yes, the dancing entertains the viewer, but I feel the screenplay portrayed realistic characters dealing with provocative issues that really make you think. What would you do in their situation?

Hadn't seen this since it was in theaters! Like always Misha is amazing. Gregory Hines was very talented in his own right. It was a lot better then I remembered. The younger generation doesn't know what the Soviet Union was like. This is a good way for them to see it.

Is this movie not on DVD....as that why you don't have it? I love this movie. Its cheesy...its stereotypical '80s cold war....but i love it!! Mikhail's dancing is amazing and Gregory Hines will blow you away. And what can you say about Isabella Rossellini except...she's beautiful and talented!!! Please get this on DVD!!!!!

Spec-freakin-tacular! Alright, its not your typical "t and a"/action film that's made these days, but the story is great, character development fab, and you will be in awe of the duo of a world class hottie (Baryshnikov) and Hines. Unexpectedly, I absolutely LOVED this movie. Rent this one.

Dancing to keep warm during the Cold War, triple axeling over the Iron Curtain...this movie is a real heart-breaker. If you love ballet and tap dance, and political history...you'll love this flick, if there are any people out there who really do love both those things....

Good reminder of the Soviet days in Russia, before the walls came down. Baryshnikov and Hines are stellar performers, both at peak performance in this movie...the dance sequences alone are worth watching.

Fascinating as a late Cold War and pre-Internet period piece, White Nights will have younger viewers wondering how the KGB character could have the power to make a worldwide celebrity disappear. But politics and technology aside, watch this movie for the dance scenes, especially the different gifts of Baryshnikov and Hines. And never miss a chance to see Helen Mirren act.

Watched for the first time in 2011. Good story but way too long and too much music and dancing. Could have been better.

This film was too boring to be suspenseful and it wasn't very mysterious. The story is about two dancers, one is a Russian ballet artist who defected to the USA. On a dance tour to Japan his plane experiences an electrical fire and has to make an emergency landing on a Russian military base. He is injured during the landing and is detained in solitary confinement in the hospital by the government. He is released into the care and custody of a tap-dancing American defector living in Siberia with his Russian wife forced by the government to baby-sit him and keep him prisoner. Eventually they become friends and team up to help each other attempt to escape back to America. The storyline is pretty good, but the movie drug on for what seemed liked days. If the movie shaved off about an hour I would rate it a star higher. At least now I know what white nights are; they happen in places close to the north pole during a seasonal period when the sun never sets.
