Dark Chamber (2007) Reviews

Dark Chamber is a mystery-thriller. The cover art is misleading, there's very little action, nominal gore, no nudity... but a strong, thought out story rooted in characters, plot and atmosphere. It does NOT look like a multi-million dollar production, but it doesn't look bad either. It's not "Saw", nor does it aspire to be. To quote a positive review "Think equal parts Panic Room and Rear Window on a pennies-between-the-cushions budget, and you've got this close quartered creep out, Dark Chamber." There are plot twists, reasonably good performances, and a creepy musical score. Its a non flashy, straightforward, interesting story that might zig when you expect to zag. I read a number of advanced reviews for the film. So, don't be afraid to take a chance. Try something different. And the special features are countless. This film meets my independent film criteria for five stars.

I don't get these member reviews saying how bad this movie is. Do they not realize this isn't a horror flick? It's a mystery/suspense movie, and an engaging one at that! And thank goodness it's not a horror flick, because most of them on this scale are pretty schlocky. Fine, it's not perfect, but rarely did its low budget distract from the movie. Dark Chamber had a well-written story with actual character development, quality acting, and convincing production value. It's dark, suspenseful, creepy, unpredictable, funny, and even thought provoking. With several things going on in the movie, everything comes together perfectly (Though the first time I watched it, the climax seemed too convenient, but I realized the next time - a flaw - that the scene was really of a longer passage of time. Trying not to give spoilers... you'll understand when you see it). This flick is one of the few independent movies that will go in my personal collection.
