The Whistle Blower (1986)
Member Rating:
Superpatriotic Briton Michael Caine learns from his son Nigel Havers, a Russian translator with Government Communications Headquarters, that the CIA might have ordered the deaths of some GCH employees to avoid any security leaks. When Havers mentions that he's thinking about blowing the whistle on the sordid goings-on, Caine, convinced that whatever the CIA is doing is for the greatest good, implores his son to keep quiet. Soon afterward, Havers is found murdered. Even after this, Caine refuses to think ill of his government and its allies. It takes the death of investigative reporter James Fox to shake Caine out of his self-denial and to confront the persons responsible for the killings within the GCH. The venerable John Gielgud offers a surprising characterization in this complex conspiracy thriller. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Dry, sometimes confusing, and ultimately boring story of an ex-gov't official who looks for answers after his son is found dead. Caine is great as always but the movie doesn't live up to his example. The ending is especially confusing. Things seem to happen far too easily and yet it is difficult to say what was accomplished. Tries to go into John Le Carre territory but isn't successful. Rent The Spy Who Came In From The Cold instead.

My wife an I enjoyed this sorta-typical-CIA-plot movie, although at times it was a bit hard to decypher their British accents.

Very enjoyable though one shouldn't be surprised with the veteran actors in the film.

Too muddled and confusing to hold your interest. Caine is a great actor but the screenplay is beyond help.

I've been on a Michael Caine roll... watching movie after movie with the superb actor. Enjoyed the story... and also James Fox, who is also very good.

Somehow this was a bit disappointing. Maybe expected too much. Story was not easy to follow.

A bit hard to understand with the heavy English accent and the plot was a bit convoluted also. I had to watch it twice to understand it.

good idea and very good acting, but develops too slowly and doesn't take the plot far enough.
