This 1980 version of the oft-filmed Henry Devere Stackpoole novel The Blue Lagoon was the first to be stamped with an "R" rating. The basic story remains unchanged. Two very small children, a boy and a girl, are shipwrecked on a lush tropical island. They are cared for by fellow castaway Leo McKern. When he dies, the kids, played with a minimum of clothing by Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins, have no one but each other. When they grow into teen-hood, they also fall madly in love. Heavily reshaped and reedited before its release, The Blue Lagoon's principal attribute is the lush photography by Nestor Almendros. Want an escape from the usual movie? This is it similar to what Castaway is, but with Brooke Shields paired up with Tom while they both grow up into adults! It reminds us that there is no escape from true love and attraction once it begins - no matter how isolated and uninformed.

the best love story ever. I just love it I wasn't even born when this move was made, but I remember watching it when I was a teenager and I loved it. I just rent it again recently and I liked as much as 20 years ago.

This movie wasn't as romantic and sweet as it was cracked up to be. It was kind of dull and never-ending really and at the end almost all the issues in the movie were left unresolved. I thought the concept of people learning about sex the natural way, through desires and feeling, without any social influence sounded great, but this movie didn't actually showcase anything like that. Since they had contact with other people until they we about 7 they took in alot of social pressures and and seemed to find sex to be dirty and bad. This movie isn't for everyone so be warned, though it was somewhat sweet it was also very contrived, like a cheesy romance novel. If you like that sort of thing, go for it.
