The Underworld series gets the prequel treatment with this third outing that fleshes out the story of the ancient war between the vampiric Death Dealers and their wolfman counterparts, the Lycans. F/X technician Patrick Tatopoulos (Godzilla, Independence Day) steps out of the effects lab and into the director's chair with this entry, which sees stars Bill Nighy returning as Viktor, the king of his vampire clan and father to Sonja (Rhona Mitra), a free-minded heir who tests her parent by heading outside of their castle's borders and doing battle with the ravenous werewolves of the surrounding area. Sonja also has a secret love affair with Lucian (Michael Sheen), the first of the Lycans, a race of lycanthropes who were bred by the vampires to be slaves and protectors to the bloodsucking clan. As the news of their love spreads to Viktor, ranks of the vampire elite help Lucian escape, leading to a revolution of the Lycans against their masters and setting up the mythology of the later latexed adventures featured in Len Wiseman's two previous films. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi
Good prequel to the other two "Underworld" movies. Probably better as a rental than as a theatrical release unless you are a major UW fan. The love affair made more sense than say the "Twilight" movie franchise.
Interesting movie. It casts a different view on the Lycans, making them look more than just simplistic beasts in other Underworld movies. Wish that this movie came out as the 1st installment of this series rather than being the 3rd. No Kate Beckinsale, but Rhona plays her part well. Unfortunately, the Sonja character is done with this movie. Wish to see this actress under a different character in future Underworld movies.
It was not as good a movie as I thought it would be. I get the dark set (they're vampires after all) but could have done without the gratuitous scene-on-the-cliff images. The entire movie was apparently just another vehicle for Bill Nighy to flaunt his insufferable inability to speak without spitting and slurring- the added fangs is no excuse.
A completely unnecessary attempt at a "supposed" prequel. This film is weak in every aspect, possessing no real plot and some of the worst acting you'll ever see. A total waste of time, even despite some interesting visuals that are delivered with lack of purpose, style, or emotion. The film completely lacks heart and soul.
