This film was a wonderful period piece with all the trappings of the imperial elite of the latter 19th century. I,like most historians are familiar with what happened at Meyerling..the characterizations of the crown prince were suuperb along with the rest of the cast..the scenery was spectacular and one felt truly in the period. There have been other films capturing this period but this version I feel was the finest. 3 stars!

The story of Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria was interesting and the production was handsomely mounted. However, we found it confusing because there were so many characters and we could not always figure out their relationships. Also, we would have benefited from closed captions.

Although this movie was absorbing, it didn't come alive for me until the second disk. I think both the filmmakers and Blockbuster could have done a better job of helping viewers get a grip on main cast members and characters. For instance, Klaus Maria Brandauer portrayed Emperor Franz Josef, Prince Rudolf's father, and Sandra Ceccarelli, Empress Elizabeth ("Sissi"), Rudolf's mother. But their characters' names aren't linked to them on Movie Details. Who was the person that Omar Sharif played? A better cast list, plus 2-3 extra features about the Hapsburgs and their family connections in Europe, would have gone a long way!!
