Read More Although disturbing of theme and content, this is an important movie. I recommend it highly if you understand that its purpose is not to entertain, but to address important social issues. We are enlightened to the complicated trials of growing up and understanding one's place in the world. Jasira is born of parents from distinct cultures. She does not comprehend how to grow up successfully in America as she has lacked the benefit of role models to provide good examples. When ensnared by an adult male who takes advantage of her innocence and ignorance, she lacks the experience to reject his advances. She feels important and "grown up" to be his "girlfriend", while feeling shameful and afraid, and not understanding why. Further complicating the situation is her relationship with a young man of whom her father disapproves because he is an African-American. This boy also takes advantage of her lack of understanding, but provides her with some measure of acceptance at school. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More As other reviewers mentioned, this film is disturbing to watch. However, the theme of lost innocence, hidden racism and finding one's indentity were excellently told in the movie. In my opinion, the movie did not shy away for the mentioned themes and causes you to really think about what is going on in the film and society. The open discussion in the Special Features section of the film were just as insightful and fairly blunt. All of the characters played their roles respectively and an individual may even relate to (or know or someone) the movie. Also, it was refreshing to see Middle Eastern characters played in a role other than the usual terrorist portayals. Overall, this is a movie to watch and think. Read More Summer Bishil who portrays the 13 year-old rather convincingly was actually 19 years-old when the film was made. The "disturbing" factor so many are writing of is magnified due to the riveting performances by the actors. I was disturbed too. One time viewing, even with the powerful performances. Considering the movie is based on a little girl only 13 that is sexually arousing herself in a very strange way and then grown men molesting he and her getting off. Sorry NOT MY KIND OF MOVIE. BORING AND I DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO WATCH IT ONCE I SAW THE MOLESTATION PART. JUST WRONG... Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Finally, a movie that offends me! I guess when it's Hollywood, it's o.k. to allow a 13 year old girl to be felt up by a grown man on a movie set. He squeezed her breast. I'm pretty sure this is illegal and someone should report it. Every last charadcter in this film is made out to be disturbing, from the teacher to the neighbor to the boyfriend to the two groups of parents to the young girl. Very bizarre with no reason. Overall: D-: because at least I did feel a lot of emotion if that was what was intended. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
