airmen of WW2 were true to life in their portrayals..they were unknowns to me..
and of course Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacClaine were magnificent..
the story was a poignant WW2 story of young American pilots and first loves..
then 50 years later the results of their individual love stories over the one
girl beautifly played by Mischa Barton..and lets not foreget the reliable Pete
Posthelwaite and Brenda Flicka. all pros and they show it..and last but not least
of course director Richard Attenborough..who directs this masterpiece..I saw it
all in one sitting which gives one an idea of the film's holding power! 41/2 stars! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Much like "Flyboys" from several years past. I really enjoyed this film. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

The movie is slow in parts and I can understand why some will have contrary opinions. The film uses many, many flashbacks which could confuse a viewer. You need to really pay attention to the names of the characters in the opening scenes in order to determine who is who in both the 1940's and 1991. There is also brief nudity. The film centers around the character Ethel Ann who is played by both an old, bitter and hard Shirley MacLaine and the very young and beautiful Mischa Barton. We rarely get a chance to see an adult drama in today's CGI world of film making. This was a treat. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I'm partial to most period films, and this one didn't disappoint. I didn't find the flashbacks that confusing because obviously the differences in costumes, etc. were a tipoff that the scenes were taking place, plus I think it may have even said on the screen what year was taking place. What was a little confusing was which characters were with the IRA and which characters were trying to get to them, etc. And, one has to take with a grain of salt the fact that the young man in Ireland can just hop on a plane to come to America - just like that! Did he really have a passport when he had probably never left that small village before in his entire life? But if you are willing to overlook some of these things, the story line is absorbing and enjoyable. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I figured with that much talent, there must be value there. However, I was sadly disappointed in the final product. The Irish cast and locations were absolutely wonderful, as was Christopher Plummer. But the three young American male actors and Shirley MacLaine's performance, which dominated most of the film, were disappointing. The plot itself reminded me of all those shallow romance novels that are so widely read and over appreciated by so many. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

There was no drive or mystery to this film. I love any subject matter related to WWII but this one just fell short. The film lacked the depth and development in the story that was needed to invest the audience. Not typical for this director (Gandhi and Chaplin)...just was expecting a lot more from a director of his caliber. This one is, unfortunately, not worth watching unless you are a fan of the OC and want to see a little more of Mischa Barton than is allowed on TV ; ) Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Picked it up just searching for something to watch. It is a fantastic romance story that will grip the hearts of men as well as women. The acting is great and the plot is not boring as so many love stories are. A must see. Shirley MacLaine just seems to know how to pick this fantastic movies.
