Member Rating:
Taylor Hackford directed this urgent melodrama about the realities of street crime, gangs, and prison life among the Chicanos of East Los Angeles. Miklo (Damian Chapa), Paco (Benjamin Bratt) and Cruz (Jesse Borrego) are three friends who are living in the East Los Angeles of 1972 as it is torn apart by violence. When the gang violence hits the three friends, they are affected by their participation in the bitter violence in different ways. Cruz, an artist, becomes crippled, and he sinks deeply into drug addiction. Paco, an accessory to murder, joins the military to avoid jail time, leading to a spot on the LAPD. Miklo, the kid with the gun, is sent to jail, where he slowly rises up in the ranks of La Onda, the San Quentin Latino gang. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This movie is the best storyline LA gang movie for anyone that doesn't like it they haven't seen it all the movie is long but great action scenes and very realistic. If you like movies like American Me, Scarface, and Carlitos Way then this is another movie you'll love.

What can I say about this movie that hasn't already been said. I have seen this movie probably over 40 times and I know it's a terribly acted movie, but it still seems to captivate me every time I watch it. I know the story from beginnig to end but I still make it a point to watch it at least once a year. Back in the 90's when I was in the Marines, you could always count on one of us Latino jarheads to have a copy; we'd get drunk and quote the movie and we had a blast. This is one of the best, worst, terribly acted, most endearing movies all at once of all time. I love this movie, just watch it and form your opinion.

The people that wrote negative remarks about this movie don't know what they are talking about. If you haven't watched this movie, you have been missing one of the greatest movies of all time. The acting is great with even a better story line. The acting is real because it WAS THE TIME. I grew up it that area and time and trust me it's REAL. For the guy that said it was predictable watched it over and over to get that idea. When you watch the movie, you will be talking just like them and maybe even dress like them on Halloween. It will truly be a classic in any color's eyes...

Great movie, and great acting. Very realistic. All the acting is good, but Damian Chapa is exceptional as Miklo. Benjamin Bratt is always good in almost anything he is in. A must see.
