A great role for Tom Berenger (who was unrecognizable to me) as a wood carver silently suffering a loss, while the townsfolk believe he is an anti-socaial brute. A boy and his mother, mourning the war death of a father and husband, approach him as a skilled craftsman, and allow his heart to reawaken in this charming Christmastime tale. Close this Review

This was a very well done adaptation of the book that adds a lot of background that was not in the book itself (like how the widow and her son got there). I am surprised this wasn't broadcast on TV last year on a channel like Hallmark since this is the sort of movie you'd see on that channel. The movie is faithful to the book and the cast is excellent. Tom Berenger is totally different from his well known "Platoon" role. The boy who plays Thomas is a spitting image of the book and Joely Richardson is very effective as the widow McDowall.
Not a splashy Holday movie by any means but a simple tale of the redemptive powers of faith that is very appropriate for these times Close this Review
