Vulgar, crude, and occasionally scandalous in its racial humor, this hilarious bad-taste spoof of Westerns, co-written by Richard Pryor, features Cleavon Little as the first black sheriff of a stunned town scheduled for demolition by an encroaching railroad. Little and co-star Gene Wilder have great chemistry, and the delightful supporting cast includes Harvey Korman, Slim Pickens, and Madeline Kahn as a chanteuse modelled on Marlene Dietrich. As in Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), and High Anxiety (1977), director/writer Mel Brooks gives a burlesque spin to a classic Hollywood movie genre; in his own manic, Borscht Belt way, Brooks was a central player in revising classic genres in light of Seventies values and attitudes, an effort most often associated with such directors as Robert Altman and Peter Bogdanovich . Some of this film's sequences, notably a gaseous bean dinner around a campfire, have become comedy classics. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Mel Brooks finest effort. Rated R for some crude sexual humor and dropping the "N" word... often. This movie would never fly in todays hypersensitive society but is actually a great example of how stupid racism and bigotry is. Funny and a lesson to be learned. What more could you ask for?

Truly original and as funny as they get whilst having a good plot. Definitely a movie everyone should see. Mel Brooks keeps the laughs coming throughout the film.

On the top of some lists as the Best Comedy Ever. And for good reason. Check out the extras - the story of how the film was written, how the studio doubted its quality, commentary from Mel and the actors, how Gene Wilder was cast DURING initial filming (because the original actor was a drunk and got the DT's), stories about Richard Pryor's role in the script. Plus deleted scenes and the pilot for an awful TV series starring a young Lou Gossett.

One of the great funny movies of our time. A must see for all adults. Still relevant today as a point of reference.

Having enjoyed it back in its heyday, I rented it again recently. Have to say I was a bit disappointed. For about the first third of the movie (when the Marlene Dietrich-like character appears) it is just DUMB. I nearly gave up. But it got going OK for the rest of it. I do love "political incorrectness" and there were some fabulous examples here. I think the reason it has had its following is that Mel Brooks DARED to put stuff in that had never been done before. I understood that and It has some great moments, but they are too few and far between. If you think faarts are inherently funny, this is the movie for you.

This could've been so much funnier. It had so much to work with, but it really falls short. If Brooks' character had more of a role in the movie this would've been a much better movie. Yes it has its moments, but overall it's not much at all. Although I also liked it better back when it first came out. But now, this is at the bottom of the list of all the Mel Brooks Movies.
