This film hearkens back to the original days of science fiction writing, when the authors were merely trying to present new and different points of view on the directions that humanity could take. So, the story is well written; and the actors do a fine job. However, I found the setting of this film quite dreary; so I am not interested in seeing it a second time. Also, I would only recommend seeing it so that you can say you saw it, and speak knowledgeably about it. Reviewed by Mario P.

Never mind the reviews below that don't get it or don't understand sci-fi beyond muppets, space ships and explosions. This is a classic and will always be a classic. Make sure you see the director's cut and NOT the original theatrical release. An absolutely brilliant movie. A thinking man's sci-fi film.

Although may people object to the voice over in this original release, I actuallly enjoyed it. i helped make the film more understandable, although I do recognize that the Director's Cut is superior. In any case it doesn't get better than this film noir meets SciFi production.

The director's cut is sad, sallow, and slow. What a shame. The original theatrical release is still my favorite movie; I consider it a real benchmark in science fiction and even better than the Phillip K Dick classic novel. But this director's cut version seems to have been cobbled together by the director of 1492: Conquest of Paradise and White Squall, not the scifi-meister of Alien. Do yourself a favor and find a copy of the original release to watch instead of this version--it's definitely worth the effort.

Like a portion of everyone else says, the movie came out boring to an extent. I haven't seen the movie beyond this director's cut, so I don't know how the original was. I did fall asleep through the middle and had to pause the movie and see the rest on a later time. I think it's an overall good idea for a film with an interesting plot, and I could see how this could recieve a cult following in the 1980's, but in this day and age you need to like scifi alot and be very patient to get through it all. Even so, I did watch it and enjoyed it to a part. Maybe this should be a one time rental.

We rented this because we heard it was a classic and a favorite of a late night Sci-Fi talk show that we both love. My husband wanted to see it, but I'd heard good things about it and I thought it would be good too. From the intro, I was expecting something like "Escape from New York" or "Terminator". But, I soon discovered that I was terribly wrong. We both thought this movie was horrible. Unwatchable, really. Honestly, I fast forwarded through the last third of the movie and it still wasn't enough. I like Sci-Fi, but some of this stuff is just too much. I didn't like The 5th Element and we both thought 2001: Space Odyssey was bad beyond words (another favorite of the Sci-Fi community). This movie was like a combination of those two...then they threw in Alice in Wonderland for good measure. I was actually rooting for Harrison Ford to kill someone, ANYONE, by the end of the first hour. Sci-Fi buffs are going to balk, but even they know this movie was horrible.
