What makes this film work so well is how beautifully developed the characters are. You really become involved and care about them. It’s funny, touching, well acted and excellently written.

This is one of my favorite films. Harvey's life is bittersweet but in the end the importance of family in all it's permentations really comes out.

Torch Song Trilogy was the first gay movie that I've ever seen, back in 1989 -- I was 16 and had just come out about my own sexuality. The REALNESS of this movie had me addicted from day one. Real gay struggles, real gay acceptance, real gay love. I recommend this movie to ANYONE who needs a strong, gay role model; or is curious about what REALLY happens in gay life. Very tasteful, very truthful.

I recommend that you view a video clip or trailer before you rent or buy this movie. Some people can't stand Harvey Fierstein's voice, and he plays a big part in this movie. Also, drag queens play a major and continuous role throughout the movie, and I don't like drag. The storyline was okay as long as you could get past the drag queens, Harvey Fierstein voice, Harvey Fierstein's flamboyant style, and the yelling that takes place among Arnold's (Harvey's) family. I also didn't like the stance that the movie took on open versus monogamous relationships; the movie clearly supports open relationships (and I do not). There are better gay movies out there, and there are a lot of gay movies that are a lot worse.
