Created by the same team responsible for the quirky, iconoclastic HBO western series Deadwood, John from Cincinnati was a magical mystery tour of the California surfing scene. Set in the town of Imperial Beach, the story focused on the multigenerational Yost family, led by Mitch Yost (Bruce Greenwood), a onetime surfing legend who had been forcibly retired (except for a few early-morning forays into the waves) by a serious knee injury. The fall of the Yost fortunes had a deleterious effect upon Mitch's son Butchie (Brian Van Holt), who had become a seemingly hopeless druggie; conversely, Butchie's own son Shaun (Grayson Fletcher) was a surfing phenom who bade fare to surpass his grandfather's celebrity--if he ever got the chance. Holding the family together was Mitch's levelheaded wife Cissy (Rebecca De Mornay), owner of the surfing-goods store that provided their income. Into this dysfunctional family unit came a fabulously wealthy and truly bizarre dude known as John Monad (Austin Nichols), who when pressed for details identified himself as "John from Cincinnati." Outwardly a boorish dimwit with an annoying habit of repeating everyone else's conversations, John was clearly operating on some Higher Plane or other, implicitly possessing the ability to heal the sick and revive the dead, and holding out the hope of redemption for the fractured Yosts. With John in the vicinity, no one found it odd that, for example, Mitch suddenly developed the ability to float in the air; everyone seemed to accept the newcomer without question or prejudice. Only the Yosts' friend Bill Jacks (Ed O'Neill), a fancier of birds and pro wrestlers, distrusted John and his motives, suspecting that he was more Satan than Saint. The series' events--subtly but inextricably linking each character with the other--unfolded in a leisurely, day-by-day "need to know" basis, with small, tantalyzing clues as to the story's outcome (Rapture? Armageddon? The Perfect Wave?) buried within each episode. Cocreated by Deadwood's David Milch and "surf noir" novelist Kern Nunn, and featuring Luke Perry and Deadwood alumnus Jim Beaver in key supporting roles, John from Cincinnati began its HBO run on June 10, 2007. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This ten episode series changed something in me the way great art changes people. It may not change the life of every viewer, but if you crave exceptional drama that challenges and inspires its audience you won't be disappointed. It's the brain-child of the genius who brought us Deadwood, if that sparks any interest, and the dialog is every bit as hilarious and brilliant. Another show that was scrapped before its time, I name it as my personal favorite TV series ever.

Can't disagree more with a few of you. Of course you were left high & dry, that's because it was cancelled. It was heading for a close second to "Deadwood" as it was perfectly cast and brilliantly different than what we're used to. Every character was so faltered and interesting that it made it hilarious at times when you brought any 2 of them together on the screen. The caliber of actors in the show was outstanding and they tightly defined each one superbly. I too felt like I was left "high and dry" but it wasn't an excuse to TRASH the entire show. I so would have loved to see how it was all going to unfold as time went by. What a damn shame when this kind of crap happens. Unfortunately, it's viewers like you that get great shows cancelled I'm afraid!! Allow a little depth in your life !!!

I kept getting the feeling while I was watching this that I was watching something bigger than it seemed. I really did enjoy it and was greatly saddened at its cancellation. My review would have been a five if they'd finished the thing.

there has been only one actual review for "john from cincinnati," and that was a 5-star review -- however, as is often the case, blockbuster has ignored reality and decided to glom a 2-star rating on the series. another trick to be aware of? often there are *no* reviews at all, yet blockbuster miraculously can produce a star rating. i asked them about this some time ago, before the switch to the "new" format. answer: "we're aware... we're working on it," ha.

Art film meets TV series in this quirky, wacky account of a dysfunctional California surfing dynasty. Well-drawn characters moving within psycho-scary subtext put this one in an all-time favorite category. I had to pay close attention to keep up with the plot - something rarely offered on the idiot box. Appreciated the rewind control on my remote so I could go back to set-scene events that turned the plot faster than you can get from wherever to John's Cincinatti. Way too cool for TV, and a great disappointment the show ran for only a single season.

This show begs to be taken seriously, yet episode after episode I am left with the feeling that I've just seen a really bad B movie.... I consider myself a thoughtful viewer who searches for good film and television and this show just never hit the mark. Frankly, each episode is an hours worth is ridiculousness.... all shine and no substance...

f you like Deadwood,, dont be fooled into thinking this crapfest is going to be of a similar quality. I watched the whole season on faith that the people who created such a great show like deadwood couldnt possibly make something so bad without delivering a big payoff at the end. But when it ends, it just ends and with no explanation as to what in the world you just watched. I want to punch this show in the neck.
