The fact that you must read subtitles and stay with a very creative first-person/subjective camera for the first half of the film makes this a challenge. At the same time, I have not seen a more beautifully filmed and spiritually rewarding film in a long time. Very much worth the effort - especially since it tells the story of a man who carried on when all seemed lost. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Julian Schnabel directed this poignant film adaption of writer and Elle Magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby's memoir relaying his thoughts and feelings after he suffered a devastating stroke that left him with only one eyelid left to communicate with - and he not only learned to do that but communicated his entire memoir of that time by dictating with only eye blinks. Fascinating story and since it it mostly seen from his own perspective you understand perhaps a little more fully what he must have gone through. His story is one of never quitting on life despite the obstacles. Beautiful story that was respectfully and beautifully brought to the screen. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

It takes patience to give it the attention it needs. I was in one of those moods when I saw it and I still didn't care for it all that much. It was interesting, very well put together, and uniquely made, but it wore me out. I kept checking the time remaining for it to end. It's also subtitled. I think it only got great reviews because it was unique. I wanted to like it. If you would have enjoyed "Breaking The Waves," with Emily Watson, but with subtitles and without the good music---Then give it a shot. It's on pace with that type of movie. It was completely in French with subtitles. The story was true and inspiring, but my daughter and I had trouble making it through to the end because of boredom. We kept thinking it must surely be about over, but it went on and on. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
