I loved this movie and watched it three times before returning it. I made my teenage son watch it too, as it's important for him to see how badly people were treated only 7 decades ago. There are tons of historic lessons for older children to learn, and the perseverence shown by the characters in this movie is inspirational. This is now one of my favorites!

In a refreshing departure from themes ranging from sports, sex, or crime, The Great Debaters celebrates academic achievement and excellence for students attending a small black college in East Texas during the 30s. For this reason alone, it's well worth a viewing to help punctuate the importance of education for our young people.

It seems that Hollywood is bringing Americans' lives to the big screen. The Great Debaters is another story that Oprah had to tell. It's an inspiring underdog story of hard work and perseverance in the face of impossible odds. Its a great story, but this telling is OK. Because it was based on a real story, the writers tried to touch on all aspects of the reality. The script should have been kept to just the college life. If they were trying to set the tone of the Segregationist South, they could have done it from the students point of view. They are the inspiration. Worth watching... RENT IT!!!
