Emotionally distanced form his two young sons following the untimely death of his devoted wife, a troubled detective investigates a series of murders that seem to be based on the Biblical prophecies concerning the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in a dark psychological thriller starring Dennis Quaid and Zhang Ziyi. Patrick Fugit, Clifton Collins Jr., and Peter Stormare co-star in a film by Spun director Jonas Åckerlund and Doom screenwriter Dave Callaham. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
This was a good thriller for the first two thirds of the movie, but the last third totally ruined the storyline with the lamest ending ever. It was as if the producers ran out of money or the writer quit the project because the storyline lost its polish, the dialogue got simpler, the plot reveal was weak and the movie ended after only 90 minutes. The acting and directing were good. The only notable positive was Zhang Ziyi's performance with English dialogue. The 5.1 Dolby Digital audio option made good use of surround sound. As for extras, there's a "Commentary" with the director, a "Deleted Scenes" option (11:40 min) and trailers for five other films. Not recommended, except for diehard Zhang Ziyi fans.
Ziyi was a bit weak in the movie, the ending was predictable and incredibly melodramatic, but it was still a pretty powerful and dark exploration of neglect turned to cruel madness. Not to mention a good and blood-soaked police procedural with a great star in Quaid and a few well-used bondage elements. Definitely worth a rewatch to ferret out little missed bits the writers snuck in.
Not well written. Just very disturbing images. If you have children of your own, the ending will upset you too much. Started off like the movie was going to be very cool, like Seven. Seems like the writers ran out of steam and ideas and had to wrap it up quickly.
This movie was not only interesting but very entertaining. I will admit it kept me on the edge of my seat. A lot of the scenes were unexpected which of course is always a good thing when it comes to a mystery movie.
