Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In finds him joining forces with Antonio Banderas for the first time in over 20 years. Banderas plays Dr. Robert Ledgard, a plastic surgeon who has invented a type of fake skin that is more durable than real skin. But he achieves this breakthrough with the assistance of Vera (Elena Anaya), a young woman he's keeping locked up in his mansion. The only person who knows about this unusual arrangement is his maid, Marilia (Marisa Paredes). But his secret, as well as additional sins of the past he's desperate to keep hidden, bubble to the surface when Marila's criminal son shows up with a gun, forces his way into Vera's room, and attempts to rape her. The Skin I Live In played at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
I usually can go along with Almodovar's films no matter how bizzare they can be, especially his comedies but this flick stretched the credibility factor too far. Also too many subplots ruined it for me so that I got bored and cut off the movie. I guess even a genius like him strikes out sometimes.
Fascinating movie, I agree with the people who say that you must be a fan of the Almodovar movies to truly appreciate this one, so unusual and the actors of course are stunning and love, love, love Antonio Banderas!! Really could have done without the "Tiger". But overall great movie.
Disturbing but quite original in every way, especially as to the form of revenge that is taken here. If you enjoy the bizarre and the strange, then you might like this one.
Oh my gosh, I am so surprised that so few people liked this film! I've never heard of this director and never seen any of his other movies (that I'm aware of anyway) and I thought this was FANTASTIC! I saw this at the independent theater in Washington, DC. The story line was so unique and fascinating. This was the best film I saw in 2011.
I never write reviews here, but had to say that this is an amazing film and very typical of Almodovar's interest in damaged people (damaged psyches, damaged bodies). Maybe he carries it further than usual in this film, but if you've seen a selection of his work from all periods you won't be "shocked." All the acting is tremendous -- especially Banderas!
Was quite disappointed that this movie's audio was either in Spanish or French. I don't care to read my movies. Turned it off quite early. Other than that, I can't comment.
If you like a movie that takes you on a ride that is completely unexpected, this is for you. I was truly surprised by the plot after being shocked by the facts of the plot. Then I was truly happy with the outcome. Up, down, up, down, over and over again. Great movie! I am in love with Antonio Banderas even more after this movie. No offense Melanie! ;-)
