Jason Lee plays Dave, a struggling musician who finds three chipmunks in his home and over time comes to love them and take them in as his "children". The only draw back to this movie is that Jason Lee doesn't convey the anger in his ALVIN! yells that the cartoon and records did, but all in all this is a fine family movie. On a level of pure entertainment, it scored big time! The kid loved the action and solo scenes of the Chipmunks. I'm sure most of them only dream of the "presents-galore the 'Munks receive", but the action was fast-paced and NOT horrible scary! (Unlike any of the Pirate etc. movies!) The laughs genuine.
The "villian" was, well... the bad guy, he wasn't scary or threatening. A welcome change in the world of kid's movies. Of course even better, he was "defeated" on a level the kids loved! (Make sure you watch the action of the first few moments after the credits start to roll!)
Long-story short? Your kids will love the movie, it won't give them nightmares, nor will they fear "I'm your favorite Uncle! Ian!" and you'll enjoy it too! Little kids (3ish & under) may get bored with some of the low-key action scenes but they'll still have a ball! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

It is a movie about chipmunks that talk, so it can't really take itself too seriously and my kids loved it and I enjoyed myself as well. Would recommend for anyone with kids, some crude humor and predictable but kept your attention right up til the end, and the animation mixed with reality was a nice touch. Read More This movie was cute. I grew up listening to the old Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas music and wondered how this live action CGI film would treat Dave and his boys. Jason Lee thankfully does not overdo his role and tries to keep things on an even keel. The songs in the film are rather cute and the update on the classic Chipmunks' tunes was welcome. The main downfall is how predictable the film was. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I have to wonder if the positive reviews posted here were planted by the movie PR firm. I was in a theater full of kids and I heard them laugh only twice, which was truly amazing for kids that laugh at anything. One time the kids laughed was when a chipmunk passed gas. The story was awful because it was less about the chipmunks than the song writer and the music industry. Rather than sing the song that made them famous, the chipmunks are "updated" to sing ganster rap. Awful, and not funny. The computer graphics of the chipmunks were decent, but the movie didn't have a worthy script. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
