I wish the mystery could be redone with a different cast and a director with a lighter touch.
Sadly, even Lauren Bacall seems miscast - and she's playing a rich, well-known, clever, older woman. She should have been perfect, so I have to say it's the director's/editor's fault.

As far as the who-dun-it aspect of the movie, it was just so-so. I'm giving an extra half star for the performances of Beatty, Tomlin and Bacall. Basically, Dafoe and Hurt just put in cameo appearances. With the kind of talent, and the premise of the mystery, this movie could, and should, have been so much better.
