Not all crusaders wear armor or carry swords. Lord Longford's professorial demeanor--his scraggly hair, gold-rimmed glasses, and bulging briefcase--was deceptive, for this dogged humanitarian sought justice for prisoners in UK jails. A member of the House of Lords, he could have led a sheltered aristocratic life, but he put his reputation on the line to defend those he believed were wrongfully incarcerated. An end note in this movie says he carried on his work to age 95! In the film, Jim Broadbent is ideally cast as Longford. Samantha Morton is the notorious Myra Hindley, whom he decides to support amid public outrage. A different sort of movie about a committed reformer: not for everyone, perhaps, but thoughtful and moving. Close this Review
Excellent fact-based drama. I knew nothing of Longford or Myra Hindley (sp). I found the movie engrossing from the start. Excellent performance by Jim Broadbent. Haunting story.

This is an excellent movie. The acting was well done and the movie was captivating from the beginning. This is based on fact and it is interesting that we have never heard of either of the principle characters. It has twists that are unexpected but isn't treated like a murder mystery - just factual. I highly recommend the movie. Close this Review
You can tell this was not a very high budget film. Yet, the movie was good because it was different. It made me think by the end as there were some loose knots.
