This is a beautiful movie about man's struggle to find meaning and purpose in his life, and the way in which we can sometimes be inspired by the most unlikely of coincidences. Frank Langella gives a wonderfully subtle, nuanced performace, and Lauren Ambrose does an equally great performance as Langella's perky, driven muse. The film reminds me of "The Station Agent" in the way in which, without violence, special effects, nudity, action, or any other Hollywood tool, the director and writer managed to tell a captivating story that holds one's attention.

On the face of it, Starting Out is about a graduate student wanting to write a thesis about an author who hasn't been published in years. The author, at first reluctant to give any piece of himself away refuses. How they become friends as his daughter is pulling away from him; and the lies and betrayal of all the characters glued me to my seat. It shows that you don't need random acts of violence, car chases and mindless sex to create an atmosphere of "What will happen next?". I'm not a fan of Lauren Ambrose as such, but the four main actors were excellent. This is a movie to watch more than once, and for those who stopped before it ended, go back and see it all the way. The ending will truly surprise you. It's a winner.

Sorry, just too boring to even watch it past the first 30 minutes... I switched off and sent it back. Acting was fine and all..... it was just the story line.

Frank Langella gives a marvelous performance here. The movie itself though was fair at best in my opinion with a subpar script in comparison to the talent of it's actors. A nearly forgotten but once beloved writer struggling to finish what is to be his final novel, is confronted by a young grad student who wants to do her thesis on his writings. Though he is hesitant to do so he begrudgingly accepts on her suggestion it might bring interest back to his writing and help him to get his novel published.
