Read More It isn't easy to pull off a movie about a writer's life, especially one that shows an author hard at work on a difficult book in the concluding years of his career. "Starting Out in the Evening" manages it magnificently. I can't believe that Frank Langella wasn't nominated for an Academy Award! His performance was outstanding in the intense, gemlike role of Leonard Schiller. Lauren Ambrose is his perfect foil as a persistent, inquisitive graduate student who wants to interview him for her thesis and won't take no for an answer. Excellent interior photography of Schiller's claustrophic apartment, as well as along the twilight streets of New York's West Side. I hated to see this film end. one. As a writer everything hit home for me and writing a novel takes time. The performances are real, excellent and unforced. It probably won't appeal to the younger generation because they never used a typwriter, haven't typed long term papers on one and can't appreciate the value of how special they are in this day and age of computers. This movie has some of the most simple and beautiful lines.
I did not want it to end and I fell in love with Frank Langella. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I started to watch, but the beginning was already not-so-good. It wasn't a bad story so much as it was the poor chemistry between Lauren Ambrose and any other actor in a scene. I mailed this back to BB and added it to my queue for another time. I want to see if I can learn anything from the writer's aspect. But, the uncomfortable acting in the beginning was enough to make me want to do something else. Don't rate this review yet. I'll be back some time. Just be warned the beginning of the film, the setup, is off-putting because of Ambrose's low appeal. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
