With a budget of only $160,000, this movie is my favorite of 2006. Glen Hansard from the Irish band the Frames is a not so convincing of an actor, but the point of the movie was to have a great singer that can half act as opposed to an actor that can half sing. This modern musical is very charming and an appropriate piece to any collection.

I was delightfully surprised by this unpretentious, feel-good movie. The songs were great, and for musicians with little to no acting experience, the acting was good and easy to watch. The chemistry and smooth interactions between the characters, and the simple and realistic storyline, and even the unrequited love at the end, all made for a great story. This movie really shows that a small indie piece can be just as captivating as some of more the chi-chi blockbusters out there.

It €™was a wondrous experience for me, but I didn't like the ending, so I've rewritten it: He comes back from London in a stretched limo, "Beatles-famous" successful with his songs, and promptly hands out $50k blocks of cash to his musical-collaborator buds. He drops an even heftier dose ($100k) on her, and also buys her an organ to match the piano. Both are joyous, except that she's re-committed to her husband, so he is understandably devastated. This only deepens his melancholy, which in turn spawns even more incredible songs and fills yet another album (love/lust denied spurs so much!), which brings him even more wealth and fame. Groupies soothe the pain for a while, until he travels to America and meets backstage a sharp, witty and still very awesome Sheryl Crow. He immediately and irretrievably falls for her; they rapturously entwine to spawn even more sublime music, thus proving once again that America rocks the world!

This is a beautiful film that maintains its perfect texture throughout. For music lovers, it could be an all time favorite. For others, the scope may not be sufficiently broad to qualify as a great one, but it works for me and watching it twice is not yet enough. For sure, seeing it "Once" was only a beginning.

My husband and I love all kinds of music so we were really looking forward to this film after reading all the raving reviews. We were extremely disappointed with the terrible acting and the total lack of singing ability of the main characters. We kept hoping that one of the above would improve and kept watching it until we couldn't stand it any longer and gave up about one third of the way through. I have never written a review before on any movie, good or bad, but this was so bad, I felt compelled to comment.

"Once" was too much. This is not really a movie. He thinks he's a good musician, she sings, storyline goes nowhere. Made it to Chapter 10 and just didn't care anymore.

This film would have been quite excellent. Should have been. But... the male half of the duo has one of the worst singing voices I have ever heard. Imagine a baritone constantly slipping into a falsetto alto range. Quite painful to hear. Everything else about the film works well. If you can get past the falsetto, you will enjoy it. It drove me crazy.
