A wonderful foreign film. This romantic comedy is a delicate mix of comedy and tragedy mixed into one. With its wonderful ensemble of colorful, talented actors, I found this movie wildly entertaining. Costumes and scenery were beautiful and elegant. The plot is a little slow and semi-predictable, but it was still a moving plot, contributing a tasteful amount of surprises and comedic moments to keep you interested. I laughed out loud and was moved at the same time. Only frustrating aspect were the subtitles. The movie was a little over 2 hours long and my eyes were sore from reading the mouthfuls of English lines (translated from French) that popped on the screen simultaneously.

As someone else said, magnifique! This was like watching a Moliere play. All of the elements he later used are here. The actor disguised as a priest. The dilletante husband. The beautiful wife. The tutors for every subject then in vogue. The daughter who secretly loves the boy next door. The servants who turn a blind eye to the shenanigans around them. It's all there. As was shown at the end, after Moliere toured the countryside for many years, he returned to Paris and staged the comedic plays that this movie posits he lived during the historically unexplained absence of two years. Watch this and you may learn more about Moliere and his plays than you realize.

I never write but I am French and I am fed up with people criticizing the French just because they did not like a movie! Just watch your "blockbuster" movies and leave us alone! If you don't like reading subtitles just give up renting foreign films!!!!! This is a great fantasy movie about a great French author and if you had read maybe one of his books you would have understood far more....

then you will like this movie. It was funny, but at the same time a little off. The main actor is hilarious.

Would be nice if this had been clearly marked as having English subtitles. The other obstacle was that you can't read all of th subtitles unless you have a big screen TV.

This was in French, not English. Even then it was not worth watching.
