As a teacher, as a school librarian, it offends me that this is so. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and would see it again and again. I even started reading Jane Austen again! The movie was funny and the actors brought the book to life. It was as if the book was black and white. It was so boring. I had to try twice to get through it, but the movie was superb! See it soon! Read More I loved this movie, and it is one of the most romantic I've seen in a while. Many interesting characters, multiple subplots and lots of cross-references to Jane Austen's six novels. I had tears in my eyes through much of the last 20 minutes once I realized that Persuasion was going to do its magic. It probably helps to have read Jane Austen or at least seen some of the movies of her books, but I don't think it's critical to enjoying the story and acting. It is certainly a chick flick but one a guy can like a lot if romantic comedies work you you. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I have not read the book that this movie was based on exactly. I have read all of Jane Austen's wonderful six books, and the plots do cross over quite a bit. I really connected with the characters and had fun matching plots with Jane Austen stories. I do caution this is a chick flick especially for those of us who like Austen. Jane Austen would have done better by them! Kathy Baker is the star for me of this great cast ensemble. Hugh Dancy's talent was wasted in this - but he's just so purty I'm always happy just to see him. The story is of a group of friends and an outsider or two that form a book club reading only Jane Austen books. Within their discussions of the books you (and they) realize they are actually talking about and working through the problems of their own lives and getting the perspective of others while doing so. Great movies I cannot pull myself away from and it was easy to pull away from this one. It was a good watch if you want an okay chick flick. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I have a difficult time believing that anyone would not want to immediately jump on Hugh Dancy if they met him in an elevator and he was obviously attracted to them. Maria Bello's character in this movie is annoyingly oblivious to his hotness until the end. I just felt nothing for any of the characters in this film. I have not read Jane Austen since high school so I guess it was a little hard to follow when they were discussing her novels. And as I get older I have less and less patience with films that I feel just are not well done.
If you are looking for a decent chick flick that is not like every other chick flick out there, it's not bad. Just be prepared and read some Jane Austen beforehand. I recommend "Persuasion" and "Sense and Sensibility". Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
