Stealing Home (1988)

The storytelling device of the flashback gets an intense workout in this tragic coming-of-age drama. Mark Harmon stars as washed-up baseball player Billy Wyatt, who is shocked when he receives news that his childhood sweetheart and friend Katie Chandler (Jodie Foster) has committed suicide and left the disposal of her ashes to his judgment. Although Billy and Katie have not kept in touch through the years, he has always carried a torch for her, his first love. On his way home, Billy recalls his past associations with the free-spirited Katie: their first meeting, the time they made love, and conversations they had, mostly during summers at the New Jersey shore. Billy also remembers the adolescent mischief he got into with his best friend, Alan Appleby (played by Jonathan Silverman in the flashbacks, Harold Ramis in the present-day), like when each of them ended up sleeping with other's prom date. Billy finally decides to cast Katie's ashes to the wind in the place where they were happiest, by the seashore. Stealing Home was reportedly based on the real-life experiences of its writers, former Second City troupe members and WKRP in Cincinnati writers Steven Kampmann and Will Aldis. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Great movie all around. A throwback to the good old days. Funny, sad, nostalgic, poignant and heartwarming with an all-star cast and an EXCELLENT oldies soundtrack. A must see!

I have not seen this movie in years...it is just such a fun (yet sad) little adventure back in time. Jodi Foster and Mark Harmon are so young and cast so well as Katie and Billy. It is a movie that will make you laugh and cry and remember some things from the past. This is like one of those movies on cable every weekend that I could watch over and over again when I have nothing else to do.

An entertaining nostalgic "dramedy". Mark Harmon (about 20 years ago) is type-cast appropriately as an adult looking back into his past (and present) childhood. Mark Harmon reminisces and we too can reminisce as we see him 20 years before his TV success in NCIS. Likewise, it's good to see Jodie Foster's talent also from a 20 year perspective. Entertaining, light movie.

SPOILER ALERT: DON'T READ THE "SYNOPSIS of STEALING HOME" under "MOVIE DETAILS" ABOVE! THE NIMROD GIVES AWAY THE ENDING IN HIS "REVIEW!!" BTW, a TRULY fantastic movie, you'll want to see it over and over again.

A charming bittersweet movie with great cast and performances--I do not think Mark Harmon has done many roles this well--and Jodie Foster is her usual talented self. KInd of a fun old times mood and interesting use of the "stealing home" metaphor.

Being a Jodie Foster fan I found this movie very disappointing. It never came together.

This is one of those low budget gold mines, wonderful acting, great music and settings, truly a must see for those who have great memories, I could see it over and over again, it's good for the soul, heart warming, great drama, good plot, I loved it...truly one of my favorite movies of all time, about innocence, love and great memories...
