Her face shows so much emotion and the supporting cast was well chosen. They worked well together and seemed like a real family with the normal family issues. Well done! Some of the other reviews I happened to read almost kept me from renting it. i am sure glad I took a chance. I didn't find it depressing at all it actually gave me some joy at times to see everyone come together in a time of great crisis and find a way to communicate their love for their mother and each other as well. Sally Field's great performance, goes without saying. The cast - the daughter, the 3 sons, the husband, the eccentric daughter-in-law, the grandchildren.... it all comes together in this heavy drama about a prelude to death. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||

Read More This is definitley not a "comedy drama": there are a few moments of comedic relief, as may be found in any tragic situation, but as a whole this is an extremly serious movie. There are also several unanswered/unaddressed character issues, which lend a weakness to the movie, but Sally gives a very strong performance. I would agree with the rating of 3 stars: just not the description as "Comedy Drama". That would be "The Family Stone" for a movie dealing with some of the same themes, but in a more gentle tone. Read More As the movie summary details, this movie about a terminally ill mother going through the final days of hospice at home with her children, all traveling home to gather round and stand vigil. Point being, there is nothing high spirited (I didn't even find much humor, when attempts were made). When it ended, you felt like you repeated what you sadley experienced in your family (if applicable). I can't imagine being in a movie theatre or on a date and watching this movie. I can't say I didn't expect it, but just not so punishing. Sally Field is just a fine actor and she gives so much to her craft. She certainly bears it all in this one. Having said that, the rest of the cast and the writing stunk! We get a glimpse of a man who is her current husband of thirteen years and yet we get no emotional depth from this character or that he is a grieving husband. As for the grown children, it leads us to believe that Sally raised a bunch of emotionally bereft strangers. Clearly the interpretation that Sally Field gave the script and the interpretation that the actors portraying the adult children gave it were polar opposites. Whoever wrote the synopsis stated "their assumedly brief farewell inexorably dragged out for two excruciating weeks" sounds as though the offspring just needed their mother "to get on with it already." There was more emotion and caring from the woman who was dying than the people who had futures to look forward to! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
