When plans to launch a second Star Trek television series in the late 1970s were scrapped by Paramount Pictures, the show's creator, Gene Roddenberry, instead transformed the aborted program's 2-hour pilot into this big budget theatrical feature. Five years after the legendary voyages of the starship Enterprise, James T. Kirk (William Shatner) is an unhappy, desk-bound admiral at Starfleet headquarters. Kirk goes aboard his old vessel to observe its re-launch under new captain Will Decker (Stephen Collins). Soon, however, an escalating crisis causes Kirk to take command of his old ship. A mysterious, planet-sized energy force of enormous power is headed for Earth. Reunited with Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and the rest of his former colleagues, Kirk takes the Enterprise inside the massive energy cloud and discovers that it is the long-lost NASA space probe Voyager. Now a sentient being after accumulating centuries of knowledge in its deep space travels, the alien, which calls itself V'ger, has come home seeking its creator. Although not a critical home run, box office receipts for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) were strong enough to inspire a revamped television series and a long-running line of theatrical sequels. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

What can I say; you have to begin somewhere. Ok as far as Star Trek movies go this one is weak. It almost cost the entire franchise it was so poorly received. They heavy questioned making Wrath of Khan because this one was so hated. It is not without its good point. The cheesiness, and yes it is very cheesy, is kind of reminisce to the old series. It is good for that old time 60's Star Trek TV feeling. It would have made a great OG episode, but as a movie, yeah it's weak.

Long and somewhat uneventful. For a true die hard star trek fan, seeing new footage after being canceled, this movie would be breath of fresh air. But for me, just getting my Star Trek "Education" i thought the movie was just okay

I saw this movie the first day it was released, and I still enjoy it. The producers were trying to find the balance between the intent of the origional series and the vastly improved state of special effects. This situation improved in later installments, for sure. Most significantly for me, I was treated to closer, more detailed perspectives of the "BIG E" and the Klingon Bird of Prey. For me, a fan of special effects since early childhood, it was a real treat.

The first "Star Trek" film has great special effects and music, but unfortunately it's plodding and lacks the heart of the original series and the other films.

No its not like the old Star Trek. Who wants to watch 79 episodes over and over. This is like Star Trek and 2001: A Space odessy combined. Its great Doug Trumbull effects, wonderful shots of the 1701-A and the now infamous sound trak. This movie truly shows the gigantic size of v'gers ship, what a task. Star Trek 2 - 6 show classic Trek stuff, this movie is a classic - The first one!.

OK, so this movie uses current events from 1978 (a la the Voyager space probe) to tie into the plot of this movie. It's pretty neat, but in the end this doesn't really feel like a true Star Trek adventure. It's too weird & abstract. ST2 & ST3 are much better returns to classic form.

The worst of the Star Trek movies. Slow, takes too long to set up, and a plot that doesn't satisfy. The only redeeming quality is that it IS Star Trek - and the cast is awesome. You have to watch this one to see the ones that follow...

This disc is not the movie, but is, basically, the extra features only disc: trailers, advertisements, documentaries, promotions for the directors edition and later TV spinoffs... but NOT the movie. All of these features praise the movie endlessly when compared to all of the sequels the movie was NOT very good.
