The tv show "Hogan's Heroes" was loosely based on this flick. Holding to pre-60's censorship codes, there is no swearing in this all male cast, an unbelievable feat to be sure. The story telling is top notch and follows well with the period in which it was produced. This movie is as intriguing to watch for it's content as well as its execution. Movies really can be good and not have sex or profanity. Now, violence, that's another thing. War is violence and this movie gives a decent taste. The end is particularly vindicating for the movies anti-hero. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Great story, great acting, and great genre. Even if you don't like WWII films, William Holdens performance alone is worth your time. Afterall, he did win an Oscar for this role. Everytime I see it on television I have to stop and watch it, if you have not seen Stalag 17 yet make it a priority. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

I guess because it is a wartime comedy and also serious it has to be 'dark'. You have seen this sort of plot before, and it has been done well in other movies. So why watch this? Because of the script and William Holden. And also there are some intense scenes with suspense and violence. Perhaps this is one of the 'originators' of the wartime satire. William Holden earned a best actor academy award for his portrayal as antihero Gary Septain. He is not the only person to distiguish himself in this character-driven movie. Otto Preminger and Sig Ruman are particularly despicable in their roles as the Nazis who the Stalag. The movie is a muder mystery of sorts. Two POWs are killed while escaping at the beginning of the movie. Their barracksmates come to believe that they were betrayed by a fellow prisoner. This is a good movie to watch with your kids (mine are 8 and 10) because there is enough comedy relief to hold their attention, but, more importantly, the movie teaches some important lessons.
