I just wanted to see a small flash of the genius found in Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red, and Suspiria. But this lacked Argento's use of stunning and colorful effects, the baroque atmosphere found in his other works, and his ingenuous positioning of scenes. Unlike the previous movies in this trilogy, it also lacked a musical score by Goblin. Even worse, the movie contained Asia Argento who fumbled through her lines as if she was a reading a cue card. And the storyline makes little sense. The movie focuses on someone's discovery of special powers, but we see those powers used; and a character who was completely insignificant to the plot magically appears out of nowhere at the end to help the protagonist. From a director who was formerly so exceptional, I did not think it was possible to make something so abysmal. After his last several flops, I will no longer watch new Argento films. The Mother of Tears is officially the third part in The Mater Trilogy. The movie is thoroughly Argentoish, which is disappointing because he is doing in 2008 what he was doing back in the 1970s. For example, the punk rocker witches would have made some semblance of sense in the 1970s, but not now. Also, the "scares" of the movie are very similar to what we've seen in Inferno and Suspiria (both of which are better than Mother of Tears). Finally, Asia Argento just can't act. Stunning Visuals, Great Soundtrack, and Interesting Camera Shots. All 3 are missing from this Hollywood-type production. The story was boring and Asia is a horrible actress. For us fans who waited for this film to come out, this is a huge disappointment. Think of this as a typical American horror film with religious tones to it. The only thing that kind of kept me interested was the gore. There were defintely some good blood scenes, but overall this film is a mess. One disturbing scene, if you really think about it, was the very unnecessary naked shower scene with Asia Argento, the directors daughter. It had no meaning in the story and there was just something creepy about Dario filming his daugther naked and rubbing herself for no reason. What does she say "Daddy did I do alright?" But after TENEBRAE a gradual slide began. The flaws in logic increased in size while the acting become more unrealistic. Eventually Argento collapsed as a filmmaker and for two decades he has rarely shown a glimmer of his former self.
I keep hearing "his latest is a return to form." Well, it's a lie. Always has been and this film is just the latest example. MOTHER OF TEARS is a disaster. The script is badly written. The acting is terrible, even from Asia. Forget about the cinematography. It is flat and lifeless. None of the visual flair of SUSPIRIA and INFERNO is on display here. Worse, the killings serve no purpose other than to please fans of gore. At no time is their any suspense or sense of danger. Instead one has to fight to stay awake.
So stay away. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No | ||
