This movie, really reasonated with me. You see all the political turmoil as it unfolds before a young girl who struggles to understand her parent's dramatic shift in political and social ideology that results in a completely different way of life. You see how this couple's rush to embrace this change, affects this little girl--some parts were very hard for me, especially the one in the parents bringing their young children to a protest that turns violent (you see gunfire coming at them and after the father narrowly rescues his daughter, he later admonishes her when she explodes at him with rage and confusion). You really see the growth of the girl's emotional intelligence and you witness her internal struggles with religion, politics, love and family, this girl clearly deserves an oscar!

This film follows the perspective of Anna, the very intelligent young daughter of French political activists, She and her impish little brother are swept up in the revolutionary activities of 1970s Paris. Her parents have welcomed refugees into their home, and Anna challenges their intrusion into famiy life. I really understood her frustration and anger. Yet her parents are loving and patient. Over time, the youngster shapes her own opinions--more conservative than her mother's and father's, yet more tolerant of others. Nina Kervel is fantastic as Anna--her face registers a galaxy of emotions.

So not the type of backstory I would like. (Upper middle class french trading comfort to defend the likes of Che Gevara) But it was brilliant! The little girl was brilliant, loved all of it!

This is a story of a French family - the father is originally from Spain, having fled Franco's regime. Anna is the daughter and the film is told through her eyes. Her father feels guilty about having not stayed to fight against Franco. When his widowed sister and niece arrive, Anna's father can't stand the guilt any longer and he and his wife choose to move from their big house and housekeeper and work to support the Communist revolution in Chili, although they stay in France. Anna's world is turned upside down and she doesn't like it! What I liked about this film is how it shows the effects of the actions of the parents upon the children. Towards the end I was a little nervous that the film was leaning towards Communist propaganda, but it did stop short of doing that, I felt. In the end, I will long remember the film for Anna's character and her journey and for that I can recommend that you see this film.

This movie was ok, but a little hard to follow some of the main characters and why they did what they did. The little girl was great. I can't really recommend renting it and it is a foreign film. A few of you may like it, but a lot more won't.

I thought from the DVD cover that this was going to be a comedy. I was wrong, but at least if it had turned out to be thought-provoking it would not have been such a waste of time. I am not closed-minded to the idea that some Communists might be honestly altruistic. Unfortunately, this movie completely ignores the noble (if misguided) intentions of Communism and instead promotes all its very worst aspects. If you are into atheism, free abortion on demand, and Anti-Americanism this is the movie for you. Otherwise, opt out.
