Splendor in the Grass (1961)

1961's premiere "date" movie represented the screen debut of Warren Beatty. Set in the 1920s, William Inge's screenplay concerns the superheated romance between working-class high schooler Natalie Wood and rich kid Beatty. Trying their best to keep their relationship from going "all the way," Beatty and Wood go through a series of unsatisfying interim romances. The troubled Wood attempts suicide and is sent to a mental institution, while Beatty impregnates freewheeling waitress Zohra Lampert. Wood and Beatty still carry a torch for one another, but circumstances preclude their getting together -- and besides, Wood suddenly realizes that she's outgrown the still-floundering Beatty. Scriptwriter William Inge shows up as a minister in Splendor in the Grass, while comedienne Phyllis Diller does a cameo as famed nightclub entertainer Texas Guinan; also, keep an eye out for Sandy Dennis, making her first movie appearance. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If you can watch this movie without crying, then you'd better have your pulse taken! This is the tragic and beautiful tale of teenage love interrupted. Natalie Wood gives the performance of her long career, and Warren Beatty gives his first screen appearance. Elia Kazan directs this lovely film with all the sensitivity it deserves.

One of the great tearjerkers from the early sixties. One of the saddest endings ever, for any movie. A must see.

I thoroughly anjoyed watching "Splendor in the Grass". In fact, I rented it twice just to watch this masterpiece--the script, acting, set design, etc. are all top notch. The writers bring the viewers emotionally into the characters' minds...we all know what life is like at different stages of our life, especially during our teen years. I don't want to give away anything, but there is a "mother-and-daughter" talk toward the end where some surprising revelations are admitted (at least from my standpoint). Bring kleenex and put a "do not disturb " sign near your TV room cause this movie will keep you rivited to the screen and your emotions will run the gamut. Excellent Movie!

The acting was good and so "back then", in the 60's. I know because i'm in my late 60's. It all resonated with me. My God! How repressed we were then.......and yet so brimming with all that unspent emotion lying just under the surface. I remember it well! And we all have stories to tell! The movie was, of course, a bit more on the dramatic side, but the truth was still there. I don't know that the young today would really get it, tho. I would hope that they would find some way to relate to it but even tho emotions are the same, the repressions are just ......gone. They have a whole other set of problems to deal with, it seems to me. I can't say that I think it is good enough to be classic in what it relates. It speaks to those who went through it and to those I would very much recommend it.

Without a doubt great acting performance by Wood and exceptional direction by Kazan. This movie has to be one in the Classic category.

This is a great movie. I have always liked the movies that Warren Beatty has been in. Natalie Wood is as cute as ever. The time period is the roaring 20's just before the stock market crash. The period motifs are worth watching the movie by themselves. One of the few socially redeeming movies that you can still see today. I love the way the title and ending commentary quote the great English poet Wordsworth. The movie is a timeless coming of age movie. It tells you that life often comes with compromises and does not always turn out the way you would expect.
