Big Wednesday (1978) Reviews

Big Wednesday (1978)
Member Rating:
Jan-Michael Vincent plays a self-destructive beach bum to whom surfing is a Zen experience. We first meet Vincent in the devil-may-care 1960s, in the company of his carefree buddies William Katt and Gary Busey. The boys reunite ten years later, after one has served time in Vietnam. The beach is still there, the waves still break upon the shore, and towards the end of the film, the characters become people that we truly care about. Barbara Hale, the real-life mother of costar William Katt, makes a piquant supporting appearance. Cut from 129 minutes to 104 for its pay-cable release, Big Wednesday is also known as Summer of Innocence. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I have always loved this movie. I am admittedly a bit biased towards it. My husband was sponsered by Bear Surfboards in the 1970's and was Gary Busey's stunt double (or surf double) for the "BIG WEDNESDAY" monster waves. Gary (and the others) did all their own surfing on the "normal" waves and were quite good. Enjoy!

How anyone can watch this and not like it, I don't know. A movie about life, growing up and friendship. First saw it back in the 70s and bought it as an adult 20 years later. A must see.

Great movie for a surfer, but entertaining for anyone. When John Milius is involved it is usually pretty good.(Appocolypse Now, HBO Rome)

A movie about kids doing kid things and how your friendships lessen when you get on with your life. A warm and fuzzy movie. I enjoyed it.

I LOVE this movie! It has parts that are very much like my young life I started reading Surfer and Surfing mags. about 1967 and started surfing in June of 1970 on 9.6 Bing Copeland longboard, then went to short boards. surfing from San Diego to No. Calif. on 1 foot to 18 foot waves I too had fun friends and had unplesant trips into Mexico, surfed good waves on the North shore at Sunset Beach, and Haliewa best time ! if your young start surfing and go to surf the North Shore, I can't surf anymore don't wait GO ! HAVE FUN ! THANKS JOHN Milius. and Thanks dad for buying my first surfboard i miss you !

A movie I have watch over and over again.the first time I saw it I was a kid with my parents in the 70's, probably the original release. With several times in between, I saw it the last time when I was in my 20's, Now in my 40's, (I feel old) I own it, Definately a movie about friendship, growing up, and life. One for the heart and soul. One of the best.

i always enjoy this and come away revived...its fun to see the locations where i've surfed, the piers and restaurants...the personalities are amazing. this is a true time capsule and if you weren't there it might seem more fictional than it really is. memories of a simpler time. i toss out lines from this movie all the time in my day to day dealings. "and turn off that crappy music" "hey you guys...split!" andf charlene tilton lobs out a "bitchin"...sweet.
