Having proven that it could stand on its own two feet without Desperate Housewives as its lead-in, Grey's Anatomy remained in its new Thursday-night slot as the seriocomic medical series entered its third season. In addition to established stars Ellen Pompeo (intern Meredith Grey) Patrick Dempsey (Dr. Derek Shepherd), Katherine Heigl (intern "Izzie" Stevens), Isaiah Washington (Dr. Preston Burke) et. al.. former recurring players Eric Dane (as plastic surgeon Mark Sloan) and Sara Ramirez (Dr. Callie Torres) have now been promoted to "regular" status. The season begins as the Seattle Grace Hospital medical team's favorite bartender Joe (Steven W. Bailey) provides those who came in late with a quick run-down of the events of the previous two seasons. Meredith is now torn between two lovers, Derek Shepherd and Dr. Finn Dandridge (Chris O'Donnell). The prickly relationship between Derek and his estranged-wife Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) is made even more so by the reappearance of their daughter. Intern Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) has decided to remain with her current amour, Preston Burke. And after seriously considering giving up the medical profession after the death of her beloved heart patient Denny, Izzie changes her mind when the Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic is established. The first of the season's two most crucial story developments occurs when Chief of Surgery Richard Weber (James Pickens) announces his impending retirement, sparking a tense competition amongst Derek, Burke, Addison and Mark to take Weber's place. The apparent dark horse in this competition is Dr. Colin Marlow (Roger Rees), though Marlow makes his mark on the proceedings by coming between Cristina and Burke. Another major plot deveopment involves a disastrous collision between a cargo ship and a ferryboat, which threatens to claim the life of protagonist Meredith Grey (it also provides Izzie's former beau Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) the opportunity to become overly involved with an unidentified accident victim, played by Elizabeth Reaser). At season's end, Dr. Weber's successor is announced, Cristina and Burke are about to be wed, Callie demands that her husband George O'Malley (Sara Ramirez) make a commitment, and the interns sweat out the results of their first-year medical exams. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Personally I was disappointed. I went from "Sorry guys, I'm outta here. I gotta be home to watch Grey's Anatomy!" to "Eh, I'll just DVR it." Meredith went from strong and frisky to completely helpless, Izzy spent majority of the season looking like death for one reason or another, and Alex turned into a total sap. What has happened to our favorite characters? If you did not have the chance to watch in on ABC last year, it MIGHT be worth renting, but I think I am going to pass on purchasing season three. Though the first few episodes were enjoyable, there were not enough episodes worth watching again. Let's hope season four has a little more excitement to it.

Although many may say that the third season was not as good as the first, or "it lacked character," I completely disagree. The third season left many things unsaid. The scenes are less explained by the characters, because as avid fans, we should know them. Also, many characters, other than MerDer, flourished. It was definently a season of growth, and I absolutely loved it.

Although it may not be as good as the First 2 seasons; this show can make even a grown man like me cry. Every week this show keeps your wanting more and more and more. Definatly worth renting.

Greys Anatomy will always be my favorite, while a couple episodes left me expecting more, it still has that drama we crave for! I cant miss one episode, the season ending was totally unexpected. Can't wait for season 4!

I do agree that the 3rd season wasn't as good as the first two, it lacked character, sotry and events, it might be because Meredith and Dr. McDreamy aren't playing hard to get anymore. But at the same time, by the end of the season they managed to add new characters, new stories and events, so I'm guessing that a drastic change wil be made on the season to come. As always it will be GREAT no matter what!! unless Dr. McDreamy dies, of course!!

I agree that the first two seasons were way better, but this one was pretty good. I haven't given up on the show just yet. I enjoy watching the McDreamy and McSteamy docs too much.

Although not as good as the first two seasons, Grey's Anatomy still remains one of the more-watched dramas in years. However, the 3-part special I thought was poorly done and written. I pray this show doesn't crash in that department like the O.C. Still worth watching or owning though.
