Read More This is the best mini-series EVER that came out.! Although it's a bit out-dated now with the filming not having the best cinematics, this mini-series is still excellent to see. The historical era and the culture of Japan are excellently portrayed by actual Japanese-speaking actors/actresses, and instead of getting english sub-titles, you either get a small narration (only at a few places), or one of the characters in the movie translates it to Richard Chamberlain's character. My family and I watched the whole series during the course of a week, and we couldn't wait to see what the next night would bring. It was voted by all of us to be the best we'd seen in a long time. We were sorry it ended.... Richard Chamberlain did an amazing job, and so did all the others. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Even though I enjoyed Richard Chamerlain's acting and the Japanese scenery, I found this entire program confusing and hard to follow. In fact, I didn't realize that the story actually was over at the end of Disc 4! I thought there would be more on Disc 5 but that was only all of the Bonus Extras. I'm glad I just rented this series instead of buying it! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read the Book. Mini series is not bad for the late 70's, though the representation of that time period Japanese culture is distinct American 70s/80s. The mini series doesn't do the book justice. If you've got hours to waste watching cheesy 70's TV shows, you can't go wrong with Shogun. Want to read another book, check out Tai Pan, second in the Asian Sagas by Clavell. Has nothing to do with Blackthorne, deals with the creation of Hong Kong. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More As expected, this epic was very long. And, as good as the story is, it is, after all, merely a story of culture clashes that resolves itself when the main protagonist finally sees things from the perspective of the people he has lived with during the time of the story. If that sounds predictable, then you get what I mean. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No |
