British filmmaker Shane Meadows looks back at his own youth in this semi-autobiographical comedy drama that examines skinhead culture in the U.K. It's the summer of 1983, and Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) is a 12-year-old boy edging into adolescence without a father, his dad having lost his life the year before in the Falkland Islands War. A gang of skinheads -- tough guys in their teens and early twenties who shave their heads, wear Ben Sherman polo shirts, and Dr. Martens boots, and listen to ska music -- walk the streets in Shaun's neighborhood, and one day they start picking on him. Shaun, however, shows he can give as good as he gets, and gang leader Woody (Joe Gilgun) takes a liking to the boy. Woody takes Shaun under his wing, and he starts hanging out with the skins, getting advice on dressing right from Woody's girlfriend, Lol (Vicky McClure), and learning about Jamaican music from West Indian skinhead Milky (Andrew Shim). However, the gang begins to change when Combo (Stephen Graham) is released from prison and returns to the neighborhood; like many skinheads, Combo has been recruited by the National Front, an openly racist right-wing political party, and soon the gang begins to fracture, with Combo taking one faction toward violence and petty crime against blacks, Indians, and Pakistanis, while Woody and his friends follow a more benign path. This Is England received its North American premiere at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie was okay. It will make you very angry because there are some racist scenes in this. It gave me a look into England that I wasn't aware of. It is worth a look.

very well done, but too unsettling both to watch and to recommend. Unless you like unsettling movies that challenge your psyche.

More autobiographical than historical, a poignant and insightful journey into the coming-of-age of a young boy in 1980's England. Turgoose is stellar in his first movie. The ending was a little disappointing in my opinion, but not enough to spoil it.

I thought this was a really enjoyable movie. It was fast paced and kept us interested throughout. I was a young boy growing up in 80's England and this is a good interpretation. My wife was skeptical about seeing this because she knew it was about skinheads. But the movie only has a couple of violent scenes. It is no where near as violent as American History X. The kid plays a great role and some amazing acting for his age. I recommend this movie and give it 4 1/2 stars.

It was a very honest look at the skin-head subculture during the end of Maggie Thatcher's term in 1983. The description Blockbuster gives is a bit misleading. This is not a comedy. It was very interesting.

THis movie was one of the more realistic skinhead movies I've seen. There are skins that are full of hate, there are skins that aren't stereotypical. They aren't racist, just proud of their country. The group that Shaun first associates with are just a bunch of kids who have banded together to be a part of something. They don't hold true to the stereotypical racist skin, 1 kid is Jamaican even.As soon as Combo is introduced, you can tell that he is no good. He's full of hate and begins to corrupt the youngsters and more dimwitted members of the group, pulling them away from the 'good kids'.This movie is heart-warming & heart-breaking. Checkout the alternate ending.I would recomend this movie to anybody who is openminded or interested in sociology/human studies.Remember, this movie is semi-autobiograpghical so watch the interview .

This movie was very powerful. Great film about England in the early 80's. Great acting. Although, I would not reccomend this movie if you are sensitive about racial issues, it's about skinheads. I loved it!

This movie truly is a beautiful one. the cinematography is wonderful, especially the video/picture flashbacks in history. This movie also strikes an emotional chord, particularly in the acting of the main character. As someone else said, be warned that the English is very thick at times. But overall, this a very good movie that shows more than the typically one dimensional violence you see in other skinhead movies.
