There is an overall theme/moral of the story, sentimentality, a brief glimpse of African-American heritage, and stepping/breaking/crumping. Keep in mind it's PG-13. As is stated in the bonus material, the performers are dancers who can act. I appreciated this movie more after seeing the work put into it when I watched the bonus material. I found myself repeatedly watching the dance/battle scenes because they are the most entertaining. I liked it for that because I'm a dancer. Once and awhile it's nice to watch a movie for pure entertainment value. The dancing is extraordinary. While the plot may be a bit formulaic, it's still fun to watch. Just don't overthink it.
