Great cast and acting all around but the story and the sequence of events is limp and overdone. Very reminiscent of Unforgiven with a smidge of Tombstone. Could have been better, i was dissappointed Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Seems that making westerns has become a lost art. Glad that this crew could reconstruct this film with some very fine acting and authentic scenery. Surprised that Peter Fonda is still alive AND that he could actually pull off a very credible performance. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More I was looking forward to watching a good new western, and had not seen the original 1957 version. I was expecting a mere entertaining plot of shootouts with some sort of love story thrown in for good measure. WRONG. This movie surpised me with it's complex characters, and a look into the souls of two men. At first, the ending was a little confusing. But the more I processed it, the richer it became. Russell Crowe and Chrisian Bale deliver. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Good sets, authentic locations and props. I didn't like that one key character was rather uncerimoniously eliminated at mid point leaving me wanting an exit with more dramatic flair. Also, one scene involved burning a man alive. (I closed my eyes and covered my ears. I don't like recalling those scenes later. They could have instead implied the violence with a little dramatic creativity. That scene is probably a reason for the 'R' rating.) Fans will enjoy Crowe costumed up as a smug (underplayed), western outlaw. Very good acting, including the hero's son (acted by Logan Lerman). This film is not anywhere close to being in the same league as say, 'The Magnificent Seven', 'Legends of the Fall', 'Tombstone', 'Once Upon a Time in the West' etc. This film won't be counted with them. Lastly remember, this is NOT FOR KIDS. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

The storyline was quality and served the Western genre with class and dignity. The theme of the movie as well as the father-son relationship between Bale's character and his movie son are relevant to today's society. Excellent! Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL?
