I am not so sure I am giving the film 4.5 stars as I am the story. I know a lot of people gave this film a bad review, but if you have ever had your heart destroyed and refused to accept reality then you too might relate. The girl is a singer and the boyfriend is unemployed / actor/drifter. From here its all about their love for each other. And the movies shows them having lots of sex.But Big deal, that alone, doesnt make a great movie. Even with that being said, HER personality is as dull as butter knife.Eventually, she breaks up with him,and leaves him to follow her singing career. End of movie. The whole movie is completely dialoug driven, and I could care less about the characters. It was a struggle to sit through the movie because the couple is soo boring and NOTHING happens. Laura Linney was in the movie for a few minutes and she is the only watchable character. This is one of the worst movies I have seen in awhile. Avoid this. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? I know many can relate to this movie as my situation isn't just unique to me but many others....rent and watch this if heartache ever was a force in your life... Read More I was a fan of the book in college and even went to a reading by the author (Ethan Hawke) at Duke University. I thought it was a perfect combination for the author to also direct the film so his vision would be appropriately captured. For some reason the pace of the book was much faster than the movie and the arrogance of his main character was too distracting for words! I don't remember William being so self indulgent as he was in the movie. To me, in the book he seemed more innocent which made the break up more agonizing than it was in the film. I didn't feel sympathetic for William like the book made you feel. I think too much time happened between when he wrote the book and when this movie was produced so his perspective on his characters may have been influenced by personal experiences.
