Long thought dead, the victim of a horrible accident, Dr. Anton Phibes (Vincent Price) still lives, surrounded by art-deco bric-a-brac and attended by mute beauty Vulnavia (Virginia North). Outwardly normal in appearance, Phibes actually wears a rubber mask, covering his hideously deformed countenance; giving away the artifice is the fact that, when he dines, he takes his food through his neck rather than his mouth. Able to speak only when plugging a wire into his damaged vocal chords, Phibes elucidates his plan to murder the medical team whom he holds responsible for the death of his wife. Each of the killings is patterned after the ten deadly plagues. Phibes saves his worst for last: trapping chief surgeon Dr. Vesalius in his lair, Phibes forces the hapless medico into a race against time to save the life of his own son. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This “cult” classic was film well before its time. Price gives us one of his most memorable roles as the daunting Dr. Phibes bent on revenging the death of his wife. Coupled with moments of Se7en, the Abominable Dr. Phibes chills and entertains better than some recent films of a similar genre. I would like to comment the theme of this film, which is "love". Phibes commits these acts due to a love that cannot be stopped or snuffed. The powerful set design and Technicolor-esque photography are so bright, beautiful, and distinctive that it only aided in creating the creative world in which Dr. Phibes resided. The set design reminded me of a splash of Kubrick tossed together with a few shreds of Jim Henson’s darker eye. Add to this mix some fancy and modern camera work, enjoyable humor, and grotesque murders and you have built only a larger platform for Price to do what he does best.

There are very few movies with Vincent Price that aren't good. He made the movie.

Still out-weirds most "weird" films to this day. Vincent Price seems to be relishing every moment. This is, imho, what Tim Burton aspires to. Great film with British macabre humor oozing out of every frame.

This movie was great. It was able to tell a story, mix in humor, and add an edgy touch of a thriller without millions of dollars of special effects. Vincent Price is an icon, and his talent is sorely missed in an era where special effects cover up for poor acting.

Over the top? Campy? Yes, Vincent Price as Dr. Phibes is all these things... and I love him for it. Hadn't seen this movie for a long time and I still enjoyed it.

Once again Vincent Price has pulled off a creepy role. He is a master of the horror films. Dr Phibes is a cult classic of the highest caliber.

Abominable is right. This so called "horror" film would frighten an insecure six year old. Vincent Price's acting is pathetically bad, way too campy and over the top. He never was much of an actor. The film is stupid, cheap looking and badly dated.
