Read More "Away From Her" is a love story of unexpected dimensions. It opens with the sad revelation that Grant's beloved wife of 44 years, Fiona, has Alzheimer's Disease. From there, utilizing flashbacks, spoken memories and philosophical musings, the film attempts to plot the course of love as well as the vagaries of life. As one character says [paraphrased], "You almost know how life is going to turn out, but you never do completely." The film touches on the many varieties of love and our endless ways of expressing it, the sadness of letting it go and the surprise of gaining it again. The title has several levels of meaning, which are interesting to think about. (One clue symbolically consists of two separate ski tracks.) This is a moving and beautiful film and, in the end, a hopeful one. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

The reality of it is we all face these kinds of crisis at some time. I cried and I laughed and will always remember Fiona's line of "Sometimes I think I'll just disappear". Heart wretching to watch their lives slip away and so interesting to see the husbands regrets come to surface. This movie makes you think about the relationships we have and whats really important in life. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Sad, romantic, poignant, tragic, painful, brave and so much more. The film has two GREAT ladies staring in the female leads Julie Christie and Olympia Dukakis and Gordon Pinsent fills the male lead exquisitely. The film's multitude of flashback scenes has seemed to confuse some folkes I know who've seen it but eventually they got back on track. The end does seem to leave most disappointed. I can accept it but would have much preferred a different end instead. This is a story of the life, choices and history of an aging couple stuck by tragedy when the wife is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. This subject needs more attention in Hollywood. At times this is too like a Lifetime made for TV film but it suits it well as too much flash or pomp would have gutted the realism. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More Alzheimer's is a horrific disease that can strike anyone for unknown reasons. One can never fathom the hurt and confusion the disease inflicts upon the family who is affected. This movie brings you into the world of Fiona & Grant and takes you into the decent of darkness enveloping the couple battling a fight with no prize. Exciting, fast-paced, and playful this movie is not. Meaningful, insightful, painful, and tender it is. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More At first study, a movie about the heartbreak of Alzheimer's disease and it is; but within that, or from it comes reflection about how we choose to live our lives, regrets, joys, defeat and how to achieve grace in all of it to endure. Julie Christie is as lovely now as she was years ago and Gordon Pinsent carries us through this tale poetically and magnificently. Memorable supporting performances by Olympia Dukakis and Kirsten Thomson as well. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No
